Mary Lou has been performing on stage for over thirty years. She most recently appeared in New York in the Lincoln Center Festival production of My Life As A Fairy Tale, which was also performed at the Aarhus Festival in Denmark. Her recent Southern California credits include The Clean House at the South Coast Repertory, Peach Blossom Fan at REDCAT and the Center for New Theater at CalArts' production of King Lear, as Earl of Kent, both in its world premiere at the Brewery in Los Angeles in 2002 and for its subsequent production in France at the Frictions Festival, sponsored by Theatre Dijon Bourgogne. She has appeared on and off Broadway numerous times and in every major regional theater in the country including Yale Repertory, the Guthrie, the American Repertory Theater, the Shakespeare Theater, Seattle Repertory, the McCarter, the Globe in San Diego, and the Williamstown Theater Festival. In recent years, she has appeared in a modern adaptation of The Misanthrope, and played the role of Paulina in The Winter's Tale, both at the Classic Stage Company in New York City. In 1997 she played the Queen in the Broadway revival of Once Upon A Mattress. Her other musical credits range in style from Robber Bridegroom and Candide to Brecht's Mother Courage and Behan's The Hostage. For her portrayal of Flamania in Changes Of Heart at the Mark Taper Forum in 1996, she received best actress nominations from both the Ovation and LA Drama Critics Circle Award committees. She has played Lady Sneerwell in two School For Scandal productions; one on Broadway at the National Actors Theater and the other off-Broadway with The Acting Company, for which she won a Drama Desk Award. She received a Joseph Jefferson Award for her role in Curse Of An Aching Heart. Her directing credits include an off-Broadway production of Beaux Stratagem at the Pearl Theatre and her own adaptation of Henry V for The Acting Company.
Her film credits include Quiz Show, Hudsucker Proxy, The Wedding Banquet, Two Bits with Al Pacino, and Illuminata. On TV she had the reoccurring role of Nurse Kathy on Titus, as well as appearances on Law and Order: SVU, and Caroline in the City. She has taught acting at New York University's Tisch Graduate School, is on the Actors Advisory Board and the Producers Board of The Acting Company as well as a founding member. She was in Group 1, the first graduating class of the Juilliard Theatre School under the direction of John Houseman.
