Steve Brown

Steven Brown is an independent filmmaker, animator and educator. He is currently Faculty and Associate Director, Character Animation Program at CalArts. His courses include Life Drawing I and Animation Layout.

From 2010-2013 Mr. Brown was designated artist in residence by the California Arts Council.

Mr. Brown has conducted classes in both Character Animation and Experimental Animation, as well as classes in Animation History and in Film Theory. In 2012, Mr. Brown helped to design CalArts’ first adult extension summer animation class,  Animation 101.

Mr. Brown has also been a long-standing instructor at the Art Center College of Design, where he has taught in the Entertainment Arts program. Additionally, he has been an instructor in Santa Monica College’s Entertainment Technology program, where he has taught courses covering digital illustration and concept painting.

For six years Mr. Brown was a visiting faculty member at the Tainan National University of the Arts, in Taiwan, where he taught in the Graduate Program in Animation. During the last three years he has been a visiting faculty in the animation department of the Beijing Film Academy.

Mr. Brown has been an animation festival judge at the Beijing Film Academy’s 13th annual animation festival, and at the 2015 Golden Panda film festival, in the student animation category.

Before his career in education, Mr. Brown worked in the Theme Entertainment industry as an environmental concept artist, and was involved in numerous projects which included several Las Vegas casinos, and various theme parks in Southern California.
He has also done freelance storyboard work on a number of independent animation productions, including My Friend Shadow, Witch Mask, Tian Keng, and Iron Skies.
