Eric Ederer is a composer, ethnomusicologist, and plucker of strings. His microtonalism is rooted in the classical Middle Eastern makam tradition and its ancient Mesopotamian precursors, but for less traditional moments he designs hybrid microtonal instruments such as the (acoustic) nautilauta, and (electric) Ur-caster and neşri-feza which he plays in his band, Makam Liberation Front. Eric recently wrangled his PhD dissertation into the more user-friendly Makam & Beyond: a Progressive Approach to Near Eastern Music Theory, but keeps his day job as sound archivist in the Special Research Collections department of the library at the University of California Santa Barbara.
