Lars Jan

Lars Jan is the son of emigres from Afghanistan and Poland. He is a director, writer, visual artist, and the founder of Early Morning Opera, a genre-bending performance + art lab whose works explore emerging technologies, live audiences, and unclassifiable experience. His original works have been presented by the BAM Next Wave Festival, Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theatre, Whitney Museum, Sundance Film Festival, REDCAT, CAP UCLA, Istanbul Modern, Toronto Nuit Blanche, London’s Burning Festival, Poland’s Divine Comedy Festival, Sydney Festival, Montreal’s Festival TransAmeriques, and Athen's Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, among many others.

He is the winner of the Audemars Piguet Art Commission (2017) and is a TED Senior Fellow, Sundance Art of Practice Fellow (2021), Creative Capital Awardee (2021) and USA Artists Fellow (2022). He holds an MFA in Theater Directing and Integrated Media from CalArts.
