Toni Smith has been teaching Acting & Voice and Speech for the last 10 years. A few years ago she took a break from teaching to tour North America in Blithe Spirit (starring Angela Lansbury), as the Elvira/ Edith understudy. That experience was a dream come true – having the opportunity to work along side someone that she had looked up to since she was a little girl.
Prior to teaching at CalArts she has taught at AMDA, Stephen F. Austin State University (in Texas), and at her alma mater UCLA. She currently continues to coach actors in the Los Angeles area in the areas of Acting, Voice & Speech, and Accent & Dialect work. She has, in the past, been the voice coach for various theaters in the LA area.
Born with a passion for performance, Toni graduated with a BFA in Theatre from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (CAP21 Studio – musical theatre conservatory), and later an MFA in Acting from UCLA's department of Theatre, Film and Television.
Representative roles include: Elvira/ Edith (u/s), Blithe Spirit – North American Tour; Elizabeth Benning (Ovation Nomination), Young Frankenstein; The Demon, Dorian’s Descent; Claudia Nardi (Eddon Award & StageSceneLA “Scenie” Award), Nine; Cathy (StageSceneLA “Best of” Award), The Last Five Years; Electra, Electra; Bobbi, Some Girls; The Young Wife, Hello Again; Helena, A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Catherine, Pippin; Meredith Parker (Austin Critic’s Table Nomination), Batboy: The Musical; Ninetta, The Green Bird.
Toni can also be seen (and heard) in various commercials and voiceovers for companies such as Panera, DIRECTV, Disney Infinity, Apple, Facebook, ACT, Blue Moon, multiple episodes of Adam Ruins Everything (vo only), The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and more than a few video games that shall remain nameless.
Toni is thrilled to join the faculty at CalArts!
